The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is one of the world’s leading bodies for research within the environmental sciences.

In the UK, NERC leads and participates in research to understand our environment and to develop business partnerships, guidance and policies that deliver knowledge, skills and technology to meet innovation needs and support growth with responsible environmental management.

NERC, through its component organization the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), has been central to a number of important national and international risk assessment programs for chemicals, the development and refinement of trace metal and nanomaterial chemistry and characterisation techniques including fate and exposure assessments for existing and emerging substances; fate modelling of nanomaterials in river catchment; modelling engineered nanoparticle bioavailability in soils and waters. CEH has a centralised analytical laboratory accredited to ISO17025:2005, and extensive experience in all aspects of the development and refinement of trace analytical methods, including nanomaterial characterisation in environmental samples.
